Droopy Ears in German Shepherd Puppies: Causes and Solutions
German Shepherd dogs are well known for their strong upright ears. However, many owners worry when their German Shepherd puppy has floppy or droopy ears.
The good news is that floppy ears are very common during the puppy growth stage, and in most cases the ears will stand naturally as the cartilage becomes stronger.
When Do German Shepherd Ears Stand Up?
German Shepherd puppies are born with soft floppy ears because the ear cartilage is still developing.
Typically, their ears begin to stand between:
8 weeks and 6 months of age
During this time you may notice:
- One ear standing while the other droops
- Both ears going up and down
- Ears standing for a few days then dropping again
This is completely normal during the growth stage.
Causes of Droopy Ears in German Shepherd Puppies:
- Natural Growth Stage
- Young puppies naturally have soft ear cartilage that takes time to strengthen.
2. Teething
- Between 3 and 6 months, puppies go through teething. Nutrients are directed toward tooth growth, which may temporarily affect ear cartilage strength.
3. Genetics
- Some puppies inherit weaker ear cartilage from their parents.
4. Poor Nutrition
- A poor-quality diet may slow cartilage development. Puppies need food rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals.
5. Ear Injuries or Infections
- Ear infections or excessive ear handling may weaken the cartilage.
How to Help Your German Shepherd Puppy’s Ears Stand
- Provide high-quality puppy food
- Offer safe chewing toys
- Avoid excessive ear touching
- Use ear taping if recommended by a veterinarian
When Should You Visit a Vet?
You should consult a veterinarian if:
- The ears remain floppy after 8 qmonths
- You notice redness, odor, or discharge
- One ear suddenly drops after standing
- Your puppy shows pain when the ears are touched
